'Magnus' Inspired Lino Prints

A collection of lino prints inspired by "The Magnus Archives" and "The Magnus Protocol", two horror podcasts distributed by Rusty Quill.

I design all of my lino prints digitally, using either Procreate or Affinity Designer 2 on my iPad Pro. I then print the digital design at scale, and transfer it onto stained sheets of lino to begin cutting.

I carve the lino using Essdee lino cutting tools. As this medium doesn't allow for reversal of mistakes, it is important to be very careful, especially around the finer details, but also to be able to work with the mistakes.

Once the lino is entirely carved, I do a quick test print onto printer paper to ensure it's coming out as intended, then move on to printing onto cartridge paper, or cotton fabric if I intend to make patches.
I use Speedball block printing ink for the majority of my printing. For two colour prints like this, I consider the order in which I should print each colour in the design stage.

An example of one of my quick test prints. I often ink smaller tests like this with an ink pad. This allows me to see any parts that may not be cut deep enough and go back to refine them without needing to waste any of the thicker block printing ink.

This print is printed in one go, with a jigsaw-like sheet of lino that allows me to remove the 'sign' piece to ink the red seperately to the black, then slot it in place before printing.

I sometimes purposely leave empty space around smaller prints to emphasise the design itself.
